October - One Week has passed Already?

Hello Everyone!

It's been pretty crazy but last weekend I managed to can 15 pints of beef

We have had chicken at a very good price recently but truth be told this house loves beef - and if I ask anyone what do you want to eat - BEEF is almost always the answer. Also since we are trimming the budget until December we are probably using the preps 2-3 times a week.

I got potatoes and carrots at a steal last week so I canned those - and the Atlas jars from the classico pasta worked just fine...like almost everyone said - and I do like how BIG they are.

4 quarts potatoes
5 pints potatoes (some with carrots)
4 pints carrots

it's amazing what you can do when you are really determined to get it done huh?

Last week I got 3 pineapples for 3 dollars and canned them midweek to test it. Some folks said when they have canned pineapple it's been very bland but these ones were very good - not like bush ripe but for box ripened - I won't complain.

Cost is about 42 cents a pint when you can it yourself. I do add a touch of lemon juice - not only for safety but also for flavor.

At one point I overcooked this pineapple syrup a bit too hot so that's why it has that brownish color. I caught it right before it turned amber LOL scary thought to have to wash a burnt pan from carbonized pineapple simple syrup.

Yesterday there were a few sales and I always stop by the 99 cent only before I hit the regular stores. I just hit the stores randomly - and it kind of trips me out how there is always something good when i say "let's check..."

I found this sri lankan tea 100 bags 99 cents
organic greens and spinach 99 cents

I checked the freezer for some frozen peas and beef sausage - yes on the peas..and guess WHAT - butterball kielbasa 99 cents. exp 11/27/2011.
I think they had 9 in there and I took them all.

I also picked up sunflower seeds and persian cucumbers -also 99 cents.

3 dishtowels were 99 cents
At the next store the chicken breast was 1.49 a lb but there were only 2 little packets left. Better something than nothing at least I could use it for a couple meals.

The cilantro was 33 cents.
The vitamin E with coconut oil - 99 cents.

El Pato was 79 cents
tomatoes 3 lbs 99 cents
jalapenos 3 lbs 99 cents

Cabbage was 6lbs 99 cents limit 3 heads

Limes 2lbs 96 cents

Pears 3 lbs for 99 cents

The limit was 6lbs but there were 2 of us so I got 12 lbs.

10 lbs of pears made 13 pints
2.5 lbs of limes made 3 pints of 75% juice.

I'm going to wait awhile to make juice by hand again especially using a reamer.

I'm tough but tired. haha

Yesterday before Lit class I stopped by Ace Hardware - I've decided that even though Ace Hardware charges 50 cents more a case I am going to buy my jars there because it is privately owned - at least the one by our house is.

a case of pint jars is 10 bucks
a 6 pack of HALF GAL jars was 10.50

Kind of pricey but it is what it is.

Pineapple $1 ea at Sprouts.
reg jar lids $1.29
wide mouth lids $1.59
pectin free with coupon

I got 3 of those- I think 2 of them fell out in the car - LOL I'm discombobulated lately.

Here are the pineapples broken down...I saved the leaves for the compost as well as the trim.

When Mr.Man got home he walked through the laundry room and said WOW our house smells like pineapples! haha. That's so great - Eat THAT febreeze!

4 fresh pineapples made 8 pints plus leftovers of about 2 cups. Not painful at all because it's water bath canning...

That's pretty much my shopping week. School has been hectic and good. I'm actually ahead in Lit because I'm such a spazz I finished my paper last Wednesday night and it isn't due until this coming Tuesday - HAHA. Imagine that. I took a Math test and it wasn't anything I really studied for and I made 3 really silly mistakes from overcorrecting it and got an 86 which brought my class average to like 94 or something. I've got some really nice people in my classes this semester - much better than last semester.

I'm just hanging in there. I'm trying to get a part time job at a coffee place or something so I can at least get some free coffee and a few hours. It seems that Mr. Man is not down with this. I know I mentioned that he already changed jobs for an increase in pay, better hours and more vacation time - but tonight he called me to tell me that he will be doing some flooring work a few Saturdays a month for extra money because I could use the money for jars.

I was really touched when he said that because he already got an increase so there wouldn't be pressure for me to work. I seriously respect him - not only because he is bringing home the bacon but because he went out and did MORE than I expected and I didn't have to nag him or something to make it happen - he did it of his own Accord. I'm not really the nagging type I've never got on his ass about money or I want this, or you have to get me this or stuff that ham head girls might do - that's just not my thing.

We prep not only for what we have but what we will have.

He is a good man truly.

September Sprint...end of the month haul and hustle

I am really exhausted lately.

School only started on Monday. That is 2 days ago . I'll go into that in another blog. I have been running for preps after class then coming home and making dinner and studying or studying and writing after dinner.

The cooking videos are pretty much going to be at a standstill during the week and then I will continue making videos during the weekend. There is just a lot going on in this house and on top of that is Afroprepper starting a new job - can you say raise and a promotion - WHEW.

We have even more changes coming at the end of the year...just wait.
Today I went and got some preps. Only 2 more days left in the month so seriously this is it.

Pineapples were only $1 each. They should be ripe enough in the next 3-4 days - at which point I will can 3 pints of fruit and 3 pints of juice

Carrots 3lbs/$1 Cucumber 3 for $1 Potatoes were only 88 cents for 5 lbs. But I didn't need any we still have 10 lbs

Petite Sirloin Steaks - buy 1 get 2 free. That came out to about 2.25 a lb or something. It's not the best price - but I am really irritated that the price of beef is just rising and rising and rising. ANNOYING - and this is the caned prep that gets the most action in our pantry besides butter. Jeez.

Yellow Onions were only 5lbs/$1 Gallon of vinegar was $2.77 that went up about 50 cents in the last 2 months.

I popped by big lots to see if they had some celery seed, they didn't but they sure did have these cedar raised garden beds. The garden stuff is on clearance because "they are making room for the Christmas stuff" What?
Regular price - $30 My price $7.50 each.
I really don't know if we are going to put up this many beds but at that price - it's cheaper than the cost of wood.

My Aunt is on an extended stay in Japan for business - she asked me to mail her some Chili Tepin and while there I found some herbs I was lacking in my own preps. nutmeg - 59cents

Mustard Seed 79 cents

Chili Tepin 1.29

It may look small but it's powerful and good.

Coriander 79 cents

Anise - 99 cents

All spice - 99 cents

Oops while at big lots I also found these things... trigger snap swivel things and the d rings that flex they were only a little above a buck - so I picked up the few they had

I also found this Red cross nasal aspirator and baby med dispenser. it was more than half off and I figured it might be good to have this in the first aid toolbox. $2 no problem.

I was looking for the 500 pack of vinyl gloves they usually have but instead I found this: infectigard spray "pens" 2 for 50 cents. That's it - that's the whole bag of beans. I really wanted to get some bacon, beef and butter canned in jars but you know the market price is simply KICKING
MY ASS.

August 2011 Preps, Halfway Through!

I know some of you have seen this and some of you haven't. This is the quick pic of our canning. There was 1 full case to the side that I coudn't include in the photo because I didn't want the table to bow lol.

We've been canning since March 20th and have given away about 20 jars. But we still have 22.5 cases of canned food. It is the best addiction ever and it puts your mind at ease to look at the "food room"

Lemon Juice and Acetone...keep it on the shelves, keep notebooks too folks.

I really try to buy domestically made stuff.

Last week this chicken was only 1.89 a lb. But this last WEEKEND boneless skinless breast was only $1.49, the drumsticks and thighs were only .68 cents a lb. UNBELIEVABLE.

Tonight we also went to purchase more ground chuck (our local store here does 90%lean for chuck) and it was holding at $1.88/lb. All I know is that I have this feeling that prices are going to hike astronomically because our prices here are UNBELIEVABLY cheap.

Canning Chicken is one of my favorite things out there. I like how it looks, how it makes the house smell and how it tastes.

I already reviewed this. Just click on the receipt below so you can feel the amazement.

There's my jardiniere and peaches in the background. I just have to keep it up.

Proof is in the Pudding.

Click on it twice to enlarge the pic.

Walgreen's is getting harder and harder to hustle.

Contact Solution: 8 bucks with instant $8 rebate
BPA free baby spoons: $1.09 clearance
Lindt Choco Truffles: $1.50 each
Aquafresh Whitening: $1.29 clearance
Johnson 500pc Q tips: $1.99

I recently started watching youtube videos on how to make your own laundry soap. Last week while I was out shopping I was just keeping an eye out for Fels Naptha/Octagon soap. I didn't find any here in the West Valley so I stocked the Lirio laundry bars (white for whites and yellow for coloured clothes)

The fels is only $1.39 at Food City in the East Valley and the 400g lirio is only .89 cents

The borax was about 2.60 a box and the washing soda is close to $3 a box. Even just having this much would make at least 110 gallons of laundry soap following the most basic recipe.

We stopped by Wally World to pick up my briquets for my brother. Well Mr.Man and I habitually cruise their clearance. Well I saw this coconut oil but I said it's still pricey. Well as we walked away from it this little Asian lady made eyes at him and said What do you Want Hunny I will mark it down for you! He said I will take these for $2...she said Ohhh only $2.50 is my Max Hunny. He said, "I'll TAKE em"

I was helping my brother organize his pantry, house and garage and I found this 25 compartment organizer thrown in the corner of his 3 car garage. I noticed the corner just needed a bit of duct tape and said Hey Can I take this and he said take it.

I'm going to use it to divvy out my first aid kit a bit. The other week Mr.Man got a pretty deep thumb cut and I had to dig inconveniently.

I had that $8 coupon for walgreens. So I went in there to use it before it expired. I found these baby wipes 3 - 100 packs for only $2.50. I also found Keri Lotion for 5.99 with a $5 rebate. Next to Cetaphil and Jergens, Keri is my next choice. I ended up paying $4.78 and they gave me a $5 instant rebate. LOL.

The white choco nestle chips were only 95 cents each at the local dollar store.

Hydrogen Peroxide was only 99 cents a quart at the 99 cent only store. That is one of the best prices I've seen for 32 ounces. We still have a few cases of hydrogen peroxide so I figured 5 quarts would suffice.

We went to the East Valley to drop off some canned stuff and things I got for the Father In Law while I was in Asia. I was really pushing my luck asking Mr.Man to stop at the Asian store when he barely got off a flight from a 4 day bachelor party. But he's a good sport and he went.

The sake was only $6.47 a bottle but they only had 2 left. I also picked up shredded seaweed, wasabi powder, toasted black sesame and salt, green tea incense and good rice flour.

While contemplating what to can I decided to throw a batch of creamcheese brownies for the boys and girls at Arizona Shootersworld - since they are SO nice to us.

While that baked I went outside to push the cucumbers aka WEEDS around - and don't you know I found a cucumber. A nice big 8 inch one that was happy to see me...

I looked again and saw this 5 inch one...

And sleeping under the other side was one more.

It's not much but at least our ghetto garden finally yielded something. I just wanted to can SOMETHING from our first gardening attempt. Looks like I'm gonna get my chance. Thank you Bees for working and thank you Mr.Man for not giving up!
